Options flow and futures order flow share a name while answering different questions. Options flow starts with option executions and their contract context. Futures order flow starts with activity in the traded futures contract, often separating executions from displayed resting orders. Gamma exposure adds a model on top of options inputs; it is another layer again.
This guide's product references were checked on October 19, 2026. OrderMap publishes the guide and offers analytical tools in both domains. We have a commercial interest in that combination, so the framework below emphasizes when you need only one layer and when adding another has a clear purpose.
Ask what instrument generated the observation
An option print belongs to a specific underlying, strike, right and expiration. Its premium depends on the option price, size and contract terms. Its relevance may extend beyond the next few minutes, especially if the position is long-dated or part of a hedge.
A futures execution belongs to a specific dated contract and price. A footprint groups those executions into bars and rows. A heatmap tracks observed resting depth over time. Neither directly tells you what the options chain looks like or which portfolio motive sits behind an execution.
For examples of documented product approaches, OptionStrat describes options-flow analysis, while Bookmap describes liquidity and execution layers. These are product descriptions, not evidence that either tool forecasts price.
| Tool type | Its starting observation | Useful question | Unsupported shortcut |
|---|---|---|---|
| Options-flow tape | Option executions and quotes | Which contracts are active under my filters? | A large call always means an outright bullish bet |
| Gamma exposure | Option inputs plus position assumptions | Where does this model concentrate sensitivity? | A gamma wall must hold |
| Futures footprint | Executions grouped by price and bar | How did aggressive activity relate to progress? | Positive delta guarantees a rally |
| Volume profile | Executions aggregated over a window | Where did activity concentrate? | A node is an automatic entry |
| Liquidity heatmap | Captured displayed depth |
