Expiration changes the scale of the question
A 0DTE option expires on the current trading day. It may have been listed earlier; the label describes its remaining life. As expiration approaches, near-the-money options can have sharply changing delta. Far-out-of-the-money options can instead become insensitive as their likelihood of finishing in the money dwindles. Saying “all gamma explodes into the close” misses that difference.
The Cboe 0DTE resource center describes the product category and its short remaining life. For research, that remaining life is a moving input. A snapshot taken early in the morning and a snapshot taken late in the afternoon describe different sensitivities even when strikes and position counts have not changed.
Gross activity is not net dealer risk
Suppose an invented strike trades 50,000 contracts in a session. That number alone does not say whether customers bought, sold, opened, closed, or traded spreads. If opposing transactions offset, net dealer exposure can be much smaller than gross volume suggests. Contract counts also do not translate directly into hedge dollars without delta, gamma, multiplier, and a positioning convention.
This distinction matters when a headline labels a large premium total a coming “gamma squeeze.” A squeeze requires a particular configuration of positions and underlying liquidity, plus behavior that reinforces the move. Volume establishes activity. It does not establish the entire causal chain.
Use a research ledger with separate columns for observed trades and modeled changes in inventory. When an observation is ambiguous, preserve it as ambiguous. It is better to leave a net exposure unknown than to silently count every transaction as new customer buying.
