Chart stocks, ETFs and indices
Compare native OHLC charts with Stock Price / Time while respecting each asset's available fields.
Choose between a bar chart and a focused price view
Stocks, ETFs and indices can be inspected through OHLC Chart, while available Equities tools can provide a focused Stock Price / Time view. Select the presentation that fits your question: candles show observed open, high, low and close for intervals, while a line emphasizes a price path. An ETF is a traded security and an index is a calculated reference value, so their available fields can differ even when both have familiar ticker-like names. Start with the supported asset category and exact symbol rather than assuming every price feed supplies the same evidence.
Open and validate the selection
The chart's own instrument controls are the safest place to verify asset type. A similar symbol in another family can require a different source and have a different history.
- Add OHLC Chart through Map's Charts category, or add Stock Price / Time from the available Equities tools.
- Choose Stocks or Indices as appropriate and select the exact supported symbol.
- Set the available interval and selected date or range.
- Review the source state and compare the quote timestamp with the latest plotted observation.
- Use the available candle or line presentation and inspect a hovered point before adding other studies.
Read OHLC and forming bars as observed data
Each candle summarizes the eligible observations for its interval. A current forming candle can be partial and update as real source observations arrive. Missing periods are not filled with invented flat candles. An earlier completed bar and a fresh partial minute can have different completeness even when drawn next to one another. When you compare a watchlist quote with a chart close, inspect their timestamps and definitions; a point-in-time quote and the last completed interval need not be numerically identical. A successful page refresh does not establish that the provider supplied a newer observation.
Know why index volume can be absent
An index value is not an equity execution, so index trade volume, execution count and volume-weighted measures can remain unavailable. Native bar-volume VWAP requires known bar volume and should not be manufactured from a related ETF or future. Likewise, an index's missing volume profile is not resolved by enabling a visual checkbox. Stock and ETF volume depends on the eligible provider source and interval. A plotted price series alone also cannot establish aggressor direction, resting order-book depth or dark-pool activity, which need their own specific evidence.
Use off-cash index estimates only when labeled
The optional implied SPX and NDX preference can extend eligible closed-cash displays using modeled prices from matched micro-futures movement and dated official anchors. Those points remain distinguishable from official index observations. They do not supply index trade volume. SPX and NDX each use their own source and reference requirements, and a missing estimate can be correct when anchors or fresh futures are unavailable. Before interpreting an evening candle, inspect its methodology label and hover explanation instead of assuming it is an official cash-index print.
Adjust presentation and indicators to the available asset
Use the native Chart type, interval, AUTO, Chart view and Chart settings controls to obtain a readable view. Some specialized chart types are disabled without required volume or price-level inputs. Native averages and momentum studies can operate on observed bars, while options analytics overlays need their own eligible underlying selections. A drawn line remains a manual annotation for that exact instrument. Account chart themes can reuse candle styling across charts, but they do not change the asset's permissions or copy another symbol's source observations into the current series.
Troubleshoot stale quotes and empty charts
Confirm asset category, exact symbol, date, interval and any historical pin. Check whether the market is closed, the source is delayed or the latest bar is still pending. Reset the chart view and restore AUTO if valid data may be offscreen. A source without the required real-time or historical permission should remain unavailable rather than showing a substitute from another asset. Include both quote and chart timestamps when reporting a mismatch, and capture the source label. These details help separate an ordinary interval boundary from missing data, delayed observations or an incorrect instrument selection.
