Read exact-contract price history
Switch between observed option bar intervals without using quote mids as trades.
Chart observed option trades
The contract drawer's price chart represents eligible observed traded history, not a continuous quote-midpoint reconstruction. Contract Price / Time is a related tool for inspecting one option's price and activity through a session. Verify the exact identity before choosing an interval. A quiet option can legitimately have a sparse price series even while current quotes remain visible in the drawer.
Choose the interval for the question
The drawer offers 1m, 5m, 15m, 1h and 1d selectors below the plot.
- Open the exact contract from the chain.
- Check root, expiration, strike and right in its header.
- Choose a minute interval to inspect session detail.
- Choose 1h or 1d for the broader eligible history requested by those views.
- Hover observed points and compare their timestamps with the quote/trade fields.
- Review missing intervals and coverage rather than joining them mentally into an uninterrupted tape.
Grouping does not create observations
Hourly history requests a broader multi-day range and daily history groups by the New York calendar, within the existing bounded history window. An interval with no eligible traded OHLC does not acquire an artificial candle. Completed provider bars and native observations retain their source semantics. A current quote can change many times without creating a new traded bar, and the premium axis does not accept underlying-strike level overlays as though they were option prices.
Worked example: a gap in a five-minute line
Suppose the chart has two observed traded points twenty minutes apart while the bid/ask fields are current. Check whether eligible trades existed in the empty buckets rather than assuming the chart should draw the quoted mid. Switching to a larger interval can aggregate observed trades into fewer buckets, but cannot prove continuous activity inside them. Compare an exact contract's traded time with another source only after matching its root and session coverage.
Troubleshoot empty historical views
Verify that the contract had eligible trades, that the selected interval's history is inside available bounds and that required historical/overnight access exists. No-trade buckets with zero or invalid OHLC must remain absent. A successful details response does not guarantee multi-day history for every option. Include interval, requested date range, exact identity and observed source labels in a ticket, particularly if only hourly or daily history differs.
Keep the exact contract identity intact
An exact option requires the provider root, expiration, strike and call/put right. SPX and SPXW remain distinct roots, even if a family view combines related data. A call and put at the same strike are separate contracts. OrderMap preserves the strike to thousandth-dollar precision in its exact identity. Underlying family, display price basis and chart interval do not alter that identity or convert an option premium into an underlying price.
Check all four fields when opening a drawer, comparing two quotes or saving an alert. An adjacent strike or different expiration can look similar in a crowded chain but has different prices and sensitivities. For support, include the full identity, selected session/date, observed timestamp and the field that appears wrong. A screenshot of a ticker alone is insufficient to reproduce a contract issue. Never use a similar contract's latest quote to fill a missing field on the selected contract; absence is safer than a plausible-looking value for the wrong instrument.
Compare traded bars with live quote behavior
Use the last-trade field as the first cross-check for a recent candle, then compare its actual execution time with the bar's grouping. Bid and ask can be current while the last trade is old, so a moving quote does not require a moving last-traded chart. A daily bar groups eligible trades by the New York calendar; an hourly selection requests a broader history than a minute-only inspection. The resulting shape can change through aggregation while preserving the admitted trades rather than inventing intermediate prices.
For a missing overnight segment, verify the exact root, access state and source date range rather than assuming ordinary daytime provider defaults are the intended application window. Actual eligible overnight observations can be included when available, but that does not prove a complete session for every option. Record which intervals have usable trades and which are absent. When comparing another chart, align session boundaries and exact identity before comparing highs/lows; a different calendar grouping or a quote-mid series can look plausible while measuring a different thing.
